A 25-year-old software developer, identified as Deepak Chowdhary, who worked in the cyber security department at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K), was found dead in his rented accommodation on Monday. Police reported the apparent suicide on Tuesday. Chowdhary, originally from Maharashtra, left behind a suicide note expressing his apologies to his parents and his feeling of being unable to keep pace with the rapid advancements in the cyber security field.
According to reports, Chowdhary had been working with the institute's Cyber Security Department for the past two years. IIT-K Director Manindra Agarwal told reporters that Chowdhary had previously spoken with a senior faculty member about his struggles and was encouraged to persevere. Agarwal had advised him to keep working hard and assured him that success would follow.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur) Ranjeet Kumar stated that Chowdhary's body was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan with a plastic rope. A handwritten suicide note found in his diary read, "I don't drink or do anything wrong. Mom, Dad, please forgive me".
Police indicated that Chowdhary seemed cheerful on Sunday night, having dinner and chatting with friends. However, on Monday, his friends grew concerned when he did not answer repeated calls and knocks on his door. They alerted the police, who, upon looking through a window, saw his body. A forensic team broke open the door, collected evidence, and sealed the room after completing the necessary procedures. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination, and Chowdhary's family has been informed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Dinesh Tripathi has stated that an investigation is currently underway, though no foul play is suspected at this time. The IIT also released an official statement expressing deep sorrow over Chowdhary's death. The institute mourned the loss of a "talented and dedicated young professional" and conveyed their prayers and strength to the bereaved family. They also mentioned that they are awaiting the outcome of the police inquiry.
The incident has prompted expressions of grief and concern within the IIT Kanpur community. The institute acknowledged the loss of a talented young professional. The tragic event also highlights the immense pressure and challenges faced by young professionals in rapidly evolving fields like cyber security.
