Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday, ahead of his scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China.
During the call, Modi conveyed India's support for all efforts aimed at peacefully resolving the conflict in Ukraine. He reiterated India's consistent position favoring a peaceful settlement and expressed commitment to providing all possible assistance in this regard. Modi also noted that he and Zelenskyy exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspects, and efforts to restore peace and stability.
President Zelenskyy shared his perspective on recent developments in Ukraine. He also informed Modi about discussions held with US President Donald Trump and European Union leaders in Washington, emphasizing the shared vision among partners on achieving real peace.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) stated that the leaders reviewed progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Modi's conversation with Zelenskyy occurred a day before his meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the SCO summit. The SCO summit is expected to provide a platform for Modi to discuss various issues with Putin and other leaders.
This diplomatic engagement takes place against the backdrop of India facing tariffs from the United States for purchasing Russian oil. India has criticized these tariffs as "unjustified and unreasonable".
Modi's discussions with Zelenskyy and upcoming meeting with Putin highlight India's active role in seeking a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict and maintaining open communication channels with both sides. His presence at the SCO summit offers an opportunity to engage with other world leaders and address regional and global challenges.
