The 1989 film Parinda, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, is a crime drama that revolves around two brothers, Kishan and Karan, played by Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor, respectively. The film is known for its intense performances and realistic portrayal of the Mumbai underworld. One of the most talked-about anecdotes from the filming of Parinda involves Jackie Shroff slapping Anil Kapoor not once, but 17 times for a single scene.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Parinda, a video was released featuring Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and Anurag Kashyap, where Jackie revealed the reason behind the multiple slaps. In the scene, Jackie's character, the elder brother, had to slap Anil's character. The first take was approved by the director, as Anil seemingly got the right expression. However, Anil Kapoor wasn't satisfied with his own performance and insisted on another take, saying, "No, I want one more".

Jackie Shroff explained that Anil wanted to fully express the feeling of being slapped by his elder brother. To achieve the required authenticity and reaction, Jackie felt that he couldn't just pretend to slap Anil. As Jackie said, "I couldn't just act as if I was slapping him. I had to slap him as one couldn't get his reaction if you slap in the air". So, with each retake requested by Anil, Jackie had to genuinely slap him. This went on for 17 takes until Anil was convinced that they had captured the perfect shot.

Both Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor have spoken about their dedication to their craft, often going to great lengths to make scenes feel real. This incident from the Parinda set exemplifies their commitment to delivering authentic performances. Despite the physical discomfort of being slapped repeatedly, Anil Kapoor prioritized the scene's emotional impact and his character's expression. Jackie Shroff, on the other hand, believed that the only way to achieve a genuine reaction was to actually slap his co-star.

Parinda was a significant film in both actors' careers and is considered a classic of Indian cinema. The film took three years to make and was initially titled Kabutarkhana. The roles were originally envisioned for Amitabh Bachchan as Kishen and Anil Kapoor as Karan, but after Bachchan declined, Jackie Shroff was cast. The film also won Jackie Shroff a Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
