Nepal is currently witnessing widespread unrest fueled by Gen Z, leading to the imposition of curfews and heightened security measures along the Indian border. The protests, initially triggered by a government ban on social media, have evolved into a broader movement against alleged corruption, political apathy, and economic stagnation.

The situation escalated rapidly, with demonstrators storming government buildings, setting the parliament ablaze, and targeting the homes of high-profile political leaders. In response to the escalating violence, the Nepal Army has issued a nationwide curfew, effective from Wednesday evening until Thursday morning. The Kathmandu District Administration Office has also imposed curfew orders effective from 8:30 am until further notice.

The unrest has prompted the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli amid widening criticism of the country's political elite. President Ram Chandra Poudel has accepted Oli's resignation and appointed him to lead a caretaker government, though the extent of his power remains unclear. The resignation, however, has done little to quell the protests, with thousands remaining on the streets.

The Indian government has taken notice of the escalating situation, advising Indian nationals residing in Nepal to exercise caution and adhere to guidelines issued by Nepali authorities. Indian citizens are also advised to defer travel to Nepal until the situation stabilizes.

In light of the developing situation, India has increased security measures along its border with Nepal. The Uttar Pradesh government has directed police to remain on high alert in border districts and has issued helpline numbers to assist stranded Indian citizens. The India-Nepal border at Sonauli in Uttar Pradesh has seen an influx of Indian tourists cutting short their trips and returning home.

The protests, largely driven by social media, saw authorities in Nepal ban 26 social media apps. This action was perceived as an attempt to suppress dissent and triggered further outrage among the youth. Although the ban was lifted on Tuesday, the protests have continued, fueled by anger over the deaths of protesters and accusations of political corruption.

The Chief of the Nepali Army, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, has urged protestors to resolve issues through peaceful dialogue. However, the situation remains tense, with reports of vandalism, arson, and clashes between protesters and security forces.

The protests have exposed deep-seated frustrations among Nepal's youth, who are demanding greater transparency, accountability, and opportunities. The long-term impact of the unrest on Nepal's political stability and its relationship with neighboring countries remains to be seen. The army has also taken charge of Kathmandu Airport.
