The Delhi High Court is currently hearing a high-profile inheritance dispute involving the children of actress Karisma Kapoor and the estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur. Samaira and Kiaan Kapur have approached the court seeking their rightful share of their father's ₹30,000 crore estate, alleging that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur, has manipulated Sunjay Kapur's will to exclude them.

Sunjay Kapur, the former chairman of Sona Comstar, passed away unexpectedly in June 2025 due to a heart attack while playing polo in London. His death has triggered a complex legal battle over his vast assets.

Samaira, 20, and Kiaan, 14, contend that their father had repeatedly assured them of their share in his estate. However, they claim that after his death, Priya Sachdev Kapur initially denied the existence of any will, stating that all of Sunjay's assets were held under the R.K. Family Trust. Later, a will dated March 21, 2025, surfaced, raising suspicions of forgery and manipulation. The children allege that this will was not shared with them for over seven weeks and was only revealed at a family meeting on July 30, a sequence of events they argue is "marred by contradictions".

Karisma Kapoor is representing her children in the case, acting as Kiaan's legal guardian. While she is not a plaintiff herself, her involvement underscores her concern for her children's well-being and future. The children's lawsuit demands a partition of the estate, a full account of all assets, and a permanent injunction to protect their legal interests. They argue that as legal heirs, they are entitled to a share of their father's property under the Hindu Succession Act, 1956.

The defendants in the case include Priya Sachdev Kapur, her minor son, Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, and a woman who has identified herself as the executor of the contested will. During the hearing on September 10, 2025, the Delhi High Court directed Priya Kapur to disclose all movable and immovable assets as of June 12, 2025, the date of Sunjay Kapur's death. Justice Jyoti Singh issued the notice, requiring Priya to present the list within three weeks.

Adding another layer of complexity, Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, has also challenged the will, claiming that she was not informed of its contents and that assets worth ₹10,000 crore should have been hers. Her lawyer stated that she was allegedly forced to sign some papers during her mourning period and has not received information regarding the assets of Sona Comstar that have been sold.

Priya Sachdev Kapur, on the other hand, claims that ₹1900 crore has already been transferred to Karisma Kapoor's children. However, the children maintain that they were "blindsided" by the "suspiciously timed" will that surfaced after their father's death, allegedly disinheriting them entirely.

Legal experts suggest that the court will likely scrutinize the will for any signs of forgery or undue influence and may lean in favor of the children, especially given the suspicious circumstances surrounding its emergence. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for inheritance law in India, particularly concerning the rights of children in divorced families. The next hearing is scheduled for October 9.
