A Delhi court has dismissed a plea seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi concerning her inclusion in the electoral rolls of 1980, prior to her acquisition of Indian citizenship. The complainant alleged that Gandhi's name was entered in the Delhi constituency's voter list three years before she became an Indian citizen in 1983. The petition claimed that this inclusion amounted to forgery and cheating of public authority.

The complaint, filed by Vikas Tripathi, was heard by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia at the Rouse Avenue Courts. The complainant argued that Sonia Gandhi's inclusion in the voters' list before obtaining citizenship was fraudulent and unlawful, suggesting the use of forged documents. He requested the court to direct the police to register an FIR and investigate the matter under the appropriate sections of the law.

The court had previously reserved its order on the plea after hearing the submissions. The counsel for the complainant emphasized that the court's role at this stage was limited to directing investigation, while the police would determine whether criminal offenses were committed after due inquiry. No appearance was entered on behalf of Sonia Gandhi during the proceedings.

According to the complainant, Sonia Gandhi's name was removed from the electoral rolls in 1982, the same year as Sanjay Gandhi's name was removed following his death. The complainant contended that her name was included in the electoral rolls of New Delhi in 1980, even though she reportedly acquired Indian citizenship only in 1983.
