Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a review of the flood-affected areas of Uttarakhand on Thursday, following devastating floods and landslides that have impacted the region. During his visit to Dehradun, the Prime Minister engaged with affected residents and chaired a high-level meeting with Governor Gurmit Singh and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to assess the extent of the damage and strategize on relief efforts.

In response to the crisis, PM Modi announced a financial assistance package of ₹1,200 crore for Uttarakhand. This fund aims to support relief and rehabilitation endeavors in the areas that have been severely affected by the recent natural calamities. In addition to the financial aid, an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the families of those who lost their lives, and ₹50,000 will be given to those who sustained injuries due to the floods and related incidents.

The recent devastation in Uttarakhand includes a flash flood that occurred on August 5, 2025, in Uttarkashi. The disaster resulted in at least five fatalities and left over 50 people missing. Dramatic visuals showed the impact of the floods, with houses and infrastructure being crushed by waves of boulders and mud. The Dharali market was submerged, and initial assessments indicated that approximately 50 hotels and 40-50 houses were swept away. A portion of the Harsil Army camp and helipad also suffered damage.

In addition to the August 5th flooding, a cloudburst struck the Naugaon area in Uttarkashi's Yamuna Valley on September 6, 2025, causing flash floods, mudslides, and widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. While there were no reported casualties due to timely evacuations, a residential house was buried, and several others were flooded.

Uttarakhand has been prone to landslides, with over 4,600 incidents recorded between 2015 and 2024, resulting in at least 316 fatalities. Satellite data from 1988 to 2022 recorded 11,219 landslides across Uttarakhand, which is among the highest in India.

The Prime Minister's visit and the substantial aid package signal the central government's commitment to assisting Uttarakhand in its recovery. The focus remains on providing immediate relief to those affected, restoring damaged infrastructure, and implementing measures to mitigate the impact of future natural disasters.
