A devastating landslide in Upper Rimbi, under the Yangthang Constituency in West Sikkim, has resulted in the deaths of at least four people, with three still missing. The incident occurred late Thursday night following heavy rainfall in the region.

According to SP Geyzing Tshering Sherpa, three people died on the spot when the landslide struck. Local police, along with villagers and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel, immediately responded to the scene to rescue those trapped and injured. The challenging terrain and lack of proper access routes forced the rescue team to construct a makeshift bridge using tree logs to reach the victims. They successfully evacuated two injured women from the landslide-hit area.

The two injured women were immediately transported to the District Hospital. Unfortunately, one of the women succumbed to her injuries during treatment. The other woman remains in critical condition. Rescue and search operations are still underway to locate the three missing individuals.

District officials have issued an advisory urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and adhere to safety guidelines, as the risk of further landslides remains high. The victim's house was completely destroyed in the landslide.

Earlier in the week, another landslide occurred in Sikkim's Gyalshing district, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old woman named Bishnu Maya Portel. This earlier incident, which took place on Monday midnight in Thangshing village, was also triggered by heavy rainfall.

लगातार monsoonal rainfall has caused multiple slides across the region. National Highway 10, a crucial link between Sikkim and the rest of the country, was blocked due to a major slide near 20th Mile, Bardang. Slides also disrupted connectivity between Chungthang and Lachen, and between Uttaray and Chewabhanjyang in Gyalshing district.
