Following the Gen Z-led protests that led to the collapse of the K. P. Sharma Oli government, Nepal is experiencing a "new dawn" with the appointment of Sushila Karki as the interim Prime Minister. Karki, the first woman to hold the position in Nepal, was chosen to lead the interim government by Gen Z representatives via Discord. The former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Karki, has expressed her commitment to honoring those who lost their lives during the demonstrations, rebuilding Nepal, and strengthening ties with India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has acknowledged the change in Nepal, reaching out to the country's Gen Z and congratulating Sushila Karki. Modi praised the youth for their positive thinking, constructive work, and efforts to clean the streets and revitalize their cities. He sees this as a sign of Nepal's resurgence and extended his best wishes for a brighter future for the nation.

The protests, driven by widespread frustration with corruption and the previous leadership, resulted in the dissolution of the 2nd Federal Parliament on September 12, 2025. President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed Karki as interim Prime Minister, tasking her caretaker government with stabilizing the country, addressing the grievances raised during the protests, and preparing for a general election. General elections in Nepal are scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Sushila Karki's Background:

Born on June 7, 1952, Sushila Karki began her career as a teacher before transitioning to law. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mahendra Morang College in 1972, a Master's in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University in 1975, and a Bachelor of Laws from Tribhuvan University in 1978. Karki was appointed as an ad-hoc judge of the Supreme Court in January 2009 and became a permanent judge in 2010. In July 2016, she made history as the first female Chief Justice of Nepal's Supreme Court.

Known for her zero-tolerance policy against corruption, Karki gained significant popularity, especially among the younger generation. Her tenure as Chief Justice was marked by politically sensitive and socially transformative judgments. Although she faced impeachment proceedings in 2017, she completed her term and has remained active in civil society.

Looking Ahead:

As interim Prime Minister, Karki aims to restore order and guide the country towards its next elections, which she intends to conduct within six months to a year. Her appointment has been well-received by the Gen Z protesters who see her as an incorruptible voice. Karki has expressed a desire to strengthen ties with India, conveying her greetings to Prime Minister Modi.
