Ravichandran Ashwin is set to represent Team India at the Hong Kong Sixes 2025, marking a return to the international stage after announcing his retirement from all forms of mainstream cricket, including the Indian Premier League (IPL). The three-day tournament is scheduled to be held from November 7 to 9 in Hong Kong. Cricket Hong Kong confirmed Ashwin's selection, generating excitement for the fast-paced, six-a-side tournament.

Ashwin's inclusion in the squad comes after he expressed his openness to participating in short-format competitions globally. In the Hong Kong Sixes, every player except the wicketkeeper must bowl an over, making it a format well-suited for multi-skilled cricketers like Ashwin.

Ashwin stated that he has watched the Hong Kong Sixes as a youngster and always wanted to be a part of it. He is looking forward to the high-octane format and the challenge of competing against quality players.

The Hong Kong Sixes tournament involves teams of six players, with each side batting for six overs consisting of six balls. The final match features six overs of eight balls each. This format is designed for aggressive batting and quick wickets, catering to fans who enjoy fast-paced cricket. Ashwin's variations and tactical understanding could prove challenging for batters in this rapid format. His experience and ability to perform under pressure will be crucial for his team. A batter must retire after scoring 50 runs, and every fielder has to bowl one over.

India last won the Hong Kong Sixes in 2005. With the addition of Ashwin, there are hopes of securing another title. Twelve teams are expected to participate in the tournament. India did not win any of their games in the tournament last year, losing to Pakistan, New Zealand, England, Oman and UAE.

Ashwin retired from international duty in December 2024, with 537 Test wickets, second only to Anil Kumble among Indian bowlers. He also took 156 ODI wickets and 72 T20 international wickets. In his IPL career, which began in 2009 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Ashwin picked up 187 wickets in 221 matches and won two titles with CSK in 2010 and 2011.

Following his retirement from the IPL, Ashwin is reportedly exploring opportunities to play in various leagues around the world and has supposedly received an offer from Cricket Australia to play in the Big Bash League later this year and could also feature in the SA20.
