Tragic Fate: Remembering Miss Kerala Turned Actress, KG George's Protégé, Who Died Young in a Plane Crash.

Rani Chandra, a name that shines brightly in Malayalam cinema, was not only a talented actress but also the first-ever Miss Kerala. Her promising career was tragically cut short at the age of 27 when she died in a plane crash.

Born in 1949 in Thirukochi (Travancore-Cochin), Rani was one of six children. Even as a student, her beauty and talent were evident, leading her to win the first Miss Kerala competition. This milestone opened doors to the film industry, where she debuted in the movie Pavappettaval, credited simply as 'Miss Kerala'.

Rani quickly rose to prominence, acting in over 70 films in a short span and earning the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress. She shared screen space with leading stars like Prem Nazir, Madhu, Jayabharathi, and Srividya. Some of her notable films include Ulsavam, Kadarumasam, Swapnadanam, Oonjal, Alinganam, and Anuragam. Her role in Ramu Kariat's Nellu (1974) also garnered attention, paving the way for her role in KG George's directorial debut, Swapnadanam.

KG George's Swapnadanam (1976) not only marked his first film but also gave Rani Chandra her first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress. Rani's natural acting style set her apart in the industry. Director IV Sasi also acknowledged Rani's support during his early career, casting her in a significant role in his first film, Utsavam.

Besides her acting career, Rani managed a dance troupe called "Miss Kerala and Party" with her sisters, which gained popularity across Kerala. When her father's business faced difficulties, Rani took on the responsibility of supporting her family through her acting and dance performances.

Tragedy struck on October 12, 1976, when Rani Chandra boarded Indian Airlines Flight 171 from Bombay to Madras. The flight, which had already faced delays due to technical issues, crashed shortly after takeoff while attempting an emergency landing at Bombay Airport. All 95 passengers, including Rani, her mother, and three sisters, died in the crash. The accident also claimed the lives of members of her dance troupe and accompanying musicians.

Rani's last movie, Bhadrakali, remained incomplete due to her untimely death. Filmmakers used body doubles and footage from her previous films to complete it.

Director IV Sasi admitted that he loved Rani and proposed marriage to her twice. However, Rani refused, stating that he deserved someone who could be a homemaker, while she had family responsibilities. Sasi was also the last person she spoke to before boarding the ill-fated flight.

The tragic end to Rani Chandra's life shocked the Malayalam film industry. Despite her short career, she left a lasting impact with her talent, dedication, and the sacrifices she made for her family.
