Dustin Wolf's Contract Extension: Calgary Flames Embrace a Future Led by Promising Goaltending Talent

The Calgary Flames have made a significant commitment to their future by signing goaltender Dustin Wolf to a seven-year, $52.5 million contract extension. This extension, which carries an average annual value of $7.5 million, will begin in the 2026-27 season and run through 2033. The announcement on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, underscores the organization's belief in Wolf as their long-term solution in net.

Wolf, 24, is coming off a strong rookie season in which he finished second in Calder Trophy voting. In 53 games, he posted a 29-16-8 record with a .910 save percentage and a 2.64 goals-against average. He also recorded three shutouts. His performance was key in keeping Calgary in the playoff race until the very end of the season. The Flames tied with St. Louis at 96 points, but the Blues clinched the final Western Conference post-season spot via a tiebreaker.

"Eight more years here in the city," Wolf said in a statement, expressing his excitement to remain in Calgary long term. He also noted the new arena planned to open for the 2027-28 season as a "big drawing point for free agents".

Prior to his NHL success, Wolf dominated the American Hockey League (AHL), earning back-to-back Goaltender of the Year awards in 2021-22 and 2022-23. In 2023, he was also named the AHL's Most Valuable Player.

The Flames clearly believe that Wolf is the player to build around, as reflected in the significant financial commitment. General manager Craig Conroy has had a productive offseason, also re-signing defenseman Kevin Bahl to a six-year contract extension ($5.35 million AAV) and forward Matt Coronato to a seven-year, $6.5 million extension.

The $7.5 million average annual value (AAV) is a substantial investment, especially considering Wolf's limited NHL experience. However, with the salary cap projected to increase steadily over the next few seasons, potentially reaching $113.5 million in 2027-28, the deal could prove to be advantageous if Wolf performs as the team anticipates.

Dustin Wolf's extension signals a new era in Calgary, solidifying their goaltending position for years to come and demonstrating confidence in their young star.
