Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has voiced his concerns about Liverpool's dominance in the Premier League, suggesting that the Reds could be "impossible to catch" in their quest to retain the title.
Arne Slot's Liverpool has begun their title defense with an unblemished record, establishing an early five-point lead at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Chelsea is already trailing behind, sitting seven points adrift after a draw against Brentford and a defeat to Manchester United.
Maresca acknowledged Liverpool's impressive form and the club's significant investment in new players. Liverpool secured the Premier League title last season with four games to spare and then broke their transfer record twice this summer, signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and Alexander Isak. In total, Liverpool spent over £400m on new signings. "If they continue in this way I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs," Maresca admitted. He further emphasized the club's clear intentions to compete for both the Premier League and Champions League titles.
Chelsea's recent form has been inconsistent, with the team winless in three matches, including a Champions League loss to Bayern Munich. They are preparing to face Lincoln in the Carabao Cup. The Blues will likely be without Cole Palmer, who suffered a groin injury in the defeat at Old Trafford. Maresca expressed hope that Palmer would not require surgery, with the club officials meeting to determine the best course of action for the injured player.
Maresca's comments come after Chelsea's narrow 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. Despite Chelsea enjoying more possession, Curtis Jones' goal secured the win for Liverpool. Maresca acknowledged the difficulty of playing against Liverpool at Anfield, stating that preventing them from creating chances and building momentum is "almost impossible" due to the environment and team. However, he also expressed pride in his team's performance, despite the loss.
