Tragic Stampede at TVK Chief Vijay's Rally: Twenty Feared Dead, Including Children, Sparks Outrage and Grief.

A political rally organized by Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, turned tragic on Saturday night as a stampede resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries. Initial reports indicated around 20 feared dead, including children. However, the death toll has tragically risen, with recent reports suggesting at least 29, and even up to 31, people have died, including children. Over 30 others were hospitalized with injuries.

The rally, held in Velusamipuram, commenced around 7:20 p.m. and attracted thousands of attendees. The incident occurred when a sudden power outage plunged the venue into near darkness, triggering panic and a deadly crowd surge. The tightly packed crowd swayed and pushed forward, leading to a stampede-like situation. Some reports indicate that attendees had been waiting for at least six hours prior to the start of the rally.

Witnesses reported seeing parents and volunteers carrying unconscious children from the venue as people tried to create space for emergency vehicles. Ambulances arrived to transport victims to nearby hospitals, including Karur Medical College Hospital, but rescue efforts were hampered by the massive crowd.

Following the incident, TVK chief Vijay paused his speech and appealed for calm, urging supporters to make way for ambulances. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his concern and directed officials, including former Minister V. Senthilbalaji and Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, to ensure immediate medical treatment for the injured. Minister Anbil Mahesh from Tiruchirappalli was also instructed to provide assistance. The Chief Minister has also requested cooperation from the public and doctors.

Health Minister Ma. Subramanian confirmed that at least 29 people died and 50 were under treatment. He also stated that 24 doctors from Tiruchi and 20 doctors from Salem were being mobilized to Karur.

Officials have stated that poor ventilation and overcrowding contributed to the severity of the incident. Police have been deployed to manage the crowds, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the power outage and the subsequent stampede.
