Home Ministry Asks Tamil Nadu for Report After Deadly Stampede: Seeking Clarity and Accountability.

In the wake of a tragic stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu, the Union Home Ministry has directed the Tamil Nadu government to submit a detailed report explaining the circumstances of the incident and the measures taken for relief and rescue. The stampede occurred on Saturday during a rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), resulting in a significant loss of life and injuries.

The incident resulted in at least 31 fatalities, including 16 women and six children, with approximately 58 individuals injured. Some reports indicate the death toll could be higher. The injured are receiving treatment at the Karur Government Medical College Hospital and various private hospitals. According to eyewitnesses, the stampede was triggered by a surge in the densely packed crowd, causing widespread panic, fainting, and people being trampled.

Following the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin dispatched senior ministers Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Ma Subramanian to Karur to oversee support for the victims' families and coordinate medical assistance. Additional DGP (Law and Order) Davidson Devasirvatham was also sent to supervise the situation. M.K. Stalin is scheduled to visit Karur to assess the situation and meet with victims and their families.

The Home Ministry's request for a report includes details on the circumstances leading to the stampede and the steps taken to provide aid to those affected. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine if there were any lapses in planning and management that contributed to the disaster.

In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund to the families of each deceased person. Those seriously injured and undergoing treatment will receive Rs 1 lakh each. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and offered support to the bereaved families, as well as wishing a swift recovery to those injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, assuring them of all possible central assistance.

The Karur stampede has ignited a debate regarding crowd control and safety protocols at large public gatherings in Tamil Nadu. The incident is considered one of the worst rally-related disasters in recent memory, spurring calls for enhanced safety measures and improved crowd management at public and political events.
