Allahabad High Court Sees Historic Appointment: Record Number of 24 Judges Appointed Simultaneously.

In a historic move aimed at reducing the significant backlog of cases, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed 24 judges to the Allahabad High Court. This marks a record number of judges appointed to the High Court in one go. The appointments, which were notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice, include a mix of experienced advocates and judicial officers.

The newly appointed judges include advocates Vivek Saran, Vivek Kumar Singh, Garima Prashad, Sudhanshu Chauhan, Abdhesh Kumar Chaudhary, Swarupama Chaturvedi, Siddharth Nandan, Kunal Ravi Singh, Indrajeet Shukla, and Satya Veer Singh. Additionally, judicial officers Dr. Ajay Kumar- II, Chawan Prakash, Divesh Chandra Samant, Prashant Mishra-I, Tarun Saxena, Rajeev Bharti, Padam Narain Mishra, Lakshmi Kant Shukla, Jai Prakash Tiwari, Devendra Singh-I, Sanjiv Kumar, Vani Ranjan Agrawal, Achal Sachdev, and Babita Rani have also been appointed.

Notably, among the appointees, Garima Prashad, Swarupama Chaturvedi and Abdhesh Kumar Chaudhary are senior advocates who practiced at the Supreme Court. Furthermore, four of the 24 appointees are women, including Garima Prashad and Swarupama Chaturvedi.

With these appointments, the working strength of the Allahabad High Court has increased from 86 to 110. While this significantly boosts the court's capacity, there remain 50 vacancies against the sanctioned strength of 160 judges. The Allahabad High Court is the largest High Court in the country.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended these appointments on September 1, 2025, and the central government officially notified them on Friday. The swearing-in ceremony for the new judges was held on Saturday, with Chief Justice Arun Bhansali administering the oath of office. The ceremony took place in the Hall on the 12th floor of the High Court Advocates' Chambers & Multilevel Parking Building, High Court Allahabad.

These appointments are expected to significantly contribute to reducing the pendency of cases in the Allahabad High Court. In addition to these appointments, the President also appointed two judges to the Himachal Pradesh High Court and one permanent judge and three additional judges to the Karnataka High Court. Furthermore, Justice Sujoy Paul of the Calcutta High Court has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, and Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma of the Rajasthan High Court has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
