Deadly Stampede at Indian Actor Vijay's Rally Leaves Dozens Dead and Injured, Over 50 Hurt.

A tragic stampede at a political rally for Indian actor and politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in at least 36 deaths and over 50 injuries. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 27, 2025, during a campaign event for Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ahead of state elections in early 2026.

The health minister of Tamil Nadu, Ma Subramanian, reported that eight children were among the deceased. According to the Tamil Nadu DGP in-charge, G. Venkatraman, the deceased included 12 men, 16 women, and 10 children (five boys and five girls). The injured, numbering over 50, are currently receiving treatment in nearby hospitals. Some are in critical condition, and officials fear the death toll may rise.

Eyewitness accounts and media reports suggest that the stampede was triggered by a multitude of factors. The organizers had announced that Vijay would speak at 12 p.m., but he did not arrive at the scheduled time, causing the crowd to assemble from 9 a.m.. Nearly 30,000 people gathered to hear Vijay speak at the rally held by his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party in Karur. As Vijay's convoy arrived, the already overflowing grounds became even more congested, and the crowd surged towards the barricades to get a glimpse of the actor. Some supporters climbed a tree to get a better view, but the branches gave way, and they fell onto the tightly packed crowd below, triggering panic.

Videos from the rally show Vijay standing on a large campaign vehicle, addressing the massive crowd. Footage also captured him throwing water bottles to supporters who were fainting and calling for police assistance as the crowd became uncontrollable.

Following the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his grief and announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD) to the families of the deceased. The Tamil Nadu government has also constituted an inquiry commission, headed by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the incident. Stalin visited the Karur hospital to meet with the families of the victims.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, calling the incident "deeply saddening". Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Indian National Congress, offered his condolences and urged party workers to provide support for relief efforts.

This is not the first time that Vijay's rallies have faced safety concerns. In October of last year, at least six deaths were reported following the first meeting of his political party. Crushes are relatively common in India when large crowds gather. In July last year, 121 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh during a Hindu religious gathering, and in June of this year, 11 fans were crushed to death in Bengaluru during celebrations for a local team's title win.

Vijay expressed his sorrow on social media, stating that his "heart is shattered" by the tragedy.
