A tragic stampede at a rally held by actor and politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in at least 31 deaths and over 50 injuries. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 27, 2025, during a campaign event led by Vijay, who is the head of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The massive gathering drew huge crowds, and as the event unfolded, numerous attendees fainted due to the overwhelming pressure and overcrowding. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, leading to a stampede. Initial reports indicated that 20 people, including children, were feared dead. However, the death toll has since risen to at least 31, with fears that it may increase further. Among the deceased are reportedly six children and 16 women. Over 50 individuals are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the stampede. Some reports indicate that the number of injured individuals could be much higher, with one report stating that 500 people have been admitted to hospitals and another 400 are expected to be admitted.

In response to the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his concern and directed officials to provide immediate medical assistance to those affected. He stated he had spoken with Health Minister Subramanian, the district collector, and senior police officials to coordinate relief efforts. Minister Anbil Mahesh was also instructed to provide assistance from nearby Tiruchirappalli. The Chief Minister has appealed to the public to cooperate with medical teams and the police.

Health Minister Ma. Subramanian confirmed the death toll of at least 29 and the 50 individuals under treatment. To manage the influx of patients, 24 doctors from Tiruchi and 20 doctors from Salem are being mobilized to Karur.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the situation became chaotic as the crowd grew denser, leading to party workers and children fainting. Vijay halted his address and appealed for calm, urging supporters to clear the way for emergency ambulances to reach those in need. Following the hospitalization of several people, police resorted to using batons to disperse the crowd in Karur.

The incident has prompted widespread concern and scrutiny regarding safety measures at large public gatherings. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the stampede to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
