In the aftermath of the tragic stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu, during a rally organized by actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed an eight-member fact-finding committee to review the circumstances that led to the incident. The stampede, which occurred on September 27, 2025, claimed the lives of 41 people and left over 60 injured.
The committee is headed by BJP MP and veteran actress Hema Malini, who is originally from Tamil Nadu. The other members of the committee include BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Tejasvi Surya, Aprajita Sarangi, Rekha Sharma, and Brij Lal, as well as Shrikant Shinde of the Shiv Sena and Putta Mahesh Kumar of the TDP. The inclusion of members from NDA allies Shiv Sena and TDP signals the BJP's emphasis on its partners.
The delegation is expected to visit the stampede site and meet with the affected families. The BJP generally sends its own leaders to the sites of tragic incidents for an inquiry but this time, the party has included MPs from its allies. The committee will investigate the circumstances that led to the stampede and submit a report.
The Karur Town police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) stating that the TVK organizers deliberately delayed Vijay's arrival, causing attendees to wait for hours without water or medical assistance, leading to fatigue, overcrowding, and the subsequent stampede. The FIR alleges that the delay was a deliberate display of political power by Vijay.
In response to the tragedy, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has appealed for peace and calm. He also announced an ex-gratia relief of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh each for the injured.
Meanwhile, police have arrested three people, including BJP and TVK leaders, for allegedly spreading rumors about the stampede. The arrested individuals are Sahayam, a BJP State Secretary (Art & Culture), Sivaneswaran, a TVK member, and Sarathkumar, TVK's 46th Ward Secretary.
The TVK has blamed the stampede on a conspiracy orchestrated by the DMK. The party has filed a petition with the Madras High Court, seeking a special team to investigate the stampede or transfer the case to the CBI. The court is scheduled to hear the case on October 3.
The stampede has triggered a political row between the ruling DMK and Vijay's TVK, which is preparing for its electoral debut in the next Assembly election. Amid the political and public outcry, the BJP has stepped into the situation, while police have intensified their search for top TVK functionaries. Police investigations revealed that vehicles were parked near the rally site in a way that blocked movement, while large numbers of people gathered in the same area, creating dangerous overcrowding. Summons were issued to the three leaders for inquiry, but police confirmed they have not responded and are currently absconding, prompting the deployment of the special force. Multiple criminal sections relating to negligence leading to loss of life have been invoked in the FIR.
