Mumbai BJP Aims to End Thackeray's 25-Year BMC Reign: A Promise to Save the City.

The Mumbai BJP Chief has launched a strong attack against the Shiv Sena (UBT)'s 25-year rule over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), alleging corruption and lack of vision and vowing to save the city from the Thackerays. The BJP is increasingly vocal about its ambition to take control of the BMC, one of the richest civic bodies in the country.

Accusations of Misrule and Corruption

The BJP's criticism centers around the alleged mismanagement and corruption that occurred during the undivided Shiv Sena's quarter-century reign in the BMC. They claim that the city's development suffered due to the Sena's flawed policies and misappropriation of funds. Mumbai BJP leaders have specifically accused the Thackerays of "looting" Mumbai of ₹1 lakh crore over the past two decades and demanded a "white paper" to account for the massive spending on nullah desilting, flood control, and river cleaning projects. The BJP insists that citizens deserve an explanation as to where these funds have gone.

Focus on Development and Vision

The BJP is presenting itself as the party with a clear vision for Mumbai's future, emphasizing development, safety, and security. They are promising to address the issues that have plagued the city under the Sena's rule, such as pothole-ridden roads and inadequate infrastructure. The party aims to provide efficient governance and improve the quality of life for Mumbaikars.

Monsoon Preparedness and BMC's Response

The BJP has also targeted the BMC's handling of monsoon preparedness, especially after the city was crippled by the first bout of rains. Following criticism, the BMC has promised to complete all pending monsoon-related work within a week and has assured the installation of dewatering pumps in waterlogged areas.

Political Landscape and Alliances

The BJP is confident about winning the upcoming BMC polls in alliance with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Mumbai BJP President Ameet Satam has expressed confidence that the Mahayuti alliance will secure over 150 seats. While dismissing the impact of a possible alliance between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, Satam stated that the Marathi population knows who has done real work and will vote for the Mahayuti. Shrikant Shinde, a Shiv Sena MP, echoed this sentiment, dismissing the Thackeray alliance as prioritizing family interests over the state's. He also challenged the opposition to prove that the Shiv Sena's 25-year control of the BMC was corruption-free.

Looking Ahead

As the BMC elections approach, the BJP is intensifying its efforts to highlight the alleged failures of the previous Shiv Sena regime and position itself as the alternative that can deliver effective governance and development to Mumbai. The party's focus on transparency, accountability, and a clear vision for the city's future is aimed at winning over voters and ending the Thackeray's hold on the BMC.
