Unveiling TRIONDA: A Deep Dive into the Official Match Ball of the 2026 World Cup

The official match ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, called 'TRIONDA', has been revealed. Adidas, the official designer and supplier of the World Cup ball since 1970, unveiled the ball on Thursday, October 2, 2025. The name TRIONDA is a combination of "tri," referring to the three host nations – Canada, Mexico, and the United States – and "onda," which means "wave" in Spanish. Therefore, Trionda translates to "Three Waves".

The design of the TRIONDA incorporates the colors of the three host nations: red, green, and blue. Gold embellishments pay tribute to the FIFA World Cup trophy. The ball also features national icons representing each country: a maple leaf for Canada, an eagle for Mexico, and a star for the United States. These symbols appear in layered graphics and are embossed across the ball's surface.

The TRIONDA features a new four-panel construction, the fewest panels ever used in a World Cup ball, designed to enhance flight stability and durability. Intentionally deep seams create a surface that ensures optimal in-flight stability by evenly distributing drag as the ball travels through the air. Embossed icons elevate grip when striking or dribbling in wet or humid conditions.

A key innovation is the evolution of Adidas' Connected Ball technology. A state-of-the-art 500Hz motion sensor chip is embedded within one of the side panels. This sensor provides real-time data to the video assistant referee (VAR) system, enhancing match officials' decision-making, particularly in offside incidents. The technology provides insight into every element of the ball's movement. The connected ball technology was first introduced in 2022.

Adidas' General Manager of Football, Sam Handy, described the TRIONDA as the most visually exciting FIFA World Cup ball ever created, emphasizing the impact of its embossed textures, layered graphics, and bold colors. The TRIONDA is made from 70% polyurethane, 20% recycled polyester, and 10% viscose cover. It also has a high-grade Butyl bladder for best air retention.

The TRIONDA will be used in all 104 matches across the 16 host cities during the 2026 World Cup. The launch of the official match ball builds excitement ahead of the final draw for the FIFA World Cup 2026, scheduled for December 5, 2025, in Washington D.C.
