Konstas Aims for Ashes Selection After Recreating Memorable MCG Ramp Shots Against India A Last Year

Sam Konstas, the young Australian Test opener, has his sights set on an Ashes call-up after recently participating in two unofficial Tests against India A. The Ashes series against England is scheduled to commence on November 21 in Perth.

Konstas gained attention after recreating ramp shot scenes from last year's Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) against India A. He revealed the opposition's reaction when he attempted a reverse ramp in the first over.

Despite a less-than-ideal tour of the West Indies, where he averaged 8.33 with a total score of 50 runs, the 19-year-old is determined to bounce back and secure a spot in the Test side, hoping to fill the void left by David Warner's retirement. After a stellar performance of 60 runs against India on his debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last year, his Test performances have been inconsistent.

In September 2025, Konstas demonstrated resilience by scoring a counter-attacking century for Australia A in Lucknow, making 109 off 144 balls. This performance significantly boosted his chances for Ashes selection. He acknowledged overcoming "mental demons" during that innings, expressing relief at being back in form and aiming to build on that momentum.

Former Australian Test opener and coach Justin Langer has voiced his support for Sam Konstas, backing him to "find his identity" and become a key player in the Ashes defense. Langer noted that Konstas displayed the necessary temperament against India's Jasprit Bumrah last summer. Despite a "confusing" year, Langer believes in Konstas' potential.

Konstas recognizes the inevitable ups and downs in a cricketer's career. He draws on advice from Australia skipper Pat Cummins on handling the pressures of Test cricket and from veteran Steve Smith on batting strategies. Konstas focuses on preparation, trusting his reactions, and keeping his approach simple: "see ball, hit ball". He emphasizes attacking when the ball is in his zone and improving his understanding of game situations.

While Konstas aims for Ashes selection, competition for the opening slot is fierce. Names like Nathan McSweeney, Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris and Marnus Labuschagne are also in contention to partner with Usman Khawaja.

Konstas, along with Campbell Kellaway and McSweeney, returned to their respective states ahead of the Sheffield Shield, where they aimed to strengthen their case for Ashes selection.
