Maple Leafs' Lorentz Suffers Injury During Game Versus Red Wings: Details and Impact on Toronto.

Maple Leafs' Lorentz Injured in Game Against Red Wings

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz sustained an upper-body injury during Saturday night's game against the Detroit Red Wings and did not return. The incident occurred in the first period, with the team announcing his unavailability ahead of the third period.

Lorentz played only three shifts, accumulating 1:17 of ice time before exiting the game. The injury appeared to occur after a hit from Red Wings defenseman Ben Chiarot near center ice. Chiarot's hit made contact with Lorentz's upper body, possibly around the head and chin area.

The loss of Lorentz is a blow to the Maple Leafs' forward depth, especially considering Scott Laughton is already sidelined with a lower-body injury sustained in a preseason game against the same Detroit Red Wings. Laughton is expected to be out for a few weeks.

Lorentz, who has a three-year contract with an average annual value of $1.35 million, has become a significant contributor to the Maple Leafs since joining the team in 2024. In 80 games last season, he recorded eight goals and 11 assists, while also providing a physical presence with 199 hits. Prior to the injury, Lorentz had two assists in the current season, recorded in the Maple Leafs' season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.

With Lorentz out, potential replacements in the lineup include Sammy Blais or Easton Cowan. Blais offers a similar playing style to Lorentz, known for his hitting ability. Cowan, a highly anticipated prospect, could make his NHL debut.

The Maple Leafs ultimately lost the game to the Red Wings by a score of 6-3. They are scheduled to face the Red Wings again on Monday. The team has moved Monday's game to 2:00 p.m. to avoid conflict with the Blue Jays.
