Suresh Gopi, the Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Tourism, has expressed his desire to step down from his ministerial position, suggesting that BJP's newly elected Rajya Sabha member C Sadanandan Master should succeed him in the central cabinet. Gopi made this statement while addressing party workers at an event in Kannur, Kerala, which was also attended by Sadanandan.
Gopi, who represents the Thrissur constituency in the Lok Sabha, stated that nominating Sadanandan to the Rajya Sabha marked a significant achievement for northern Kannur district politics. He believes that appointing Sadanandan as a Union Minister would usher in a new chapter in Kerala's political history. "I am saying here with sincerity that Sadanandan Master should be made a (Union) minister after removing me," Gopi stated. He also mentioned his hope that Sadanandan's MP office would soon be upgraded to a ministerial office.
The actor-turned-politician, who joined the BJP in October 2016, noted that he was among the party's youngest members in the state. He suggested that his appointment as a Union Minister was a recognition of the mandate given by the people during the Lok Sabha polls. However, Gopi admitted that he "never wanted to be a minister by quitting my film career," and that his income has significantly decreased recently.
In August 2024, Gopi had expressed his willingness to step down from his ministerial duties if it interfered with his acting career, stating that "Cinema is my passion". He had also mentioned discussing his film commitments with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who granted him permission to resume acting. Gopi had emphasized that he accepted the ministerial role as a gesture of gratitude to the voters of Thrissur, who supported his victory in the recent Lok Sabha elections. He also noted that being a minister hindered his ability to be with his voters in Thrissur and that he could act and be more present in his constituency if relieved of his ministerial post.
