R&B Icon D'Angelo Passes Away at 51 Following a Quiet Struggle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Michael D'Angelo Archer, the Grammy-winning R&B and soul icon known to the world as D'Angelo, has died at the age of 51. The "Brown Sugar" singer-songwriter passed away on Tuesday morning in New York City after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. Sources connected to his family and his former manager, Kedar Massenburg, confirmed the news.

D'Angelo's family released a statement acknowledging his passing: "The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life… After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D'Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D'Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025". The family added, "We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind". They have requested privacy during this difficult time, inviting fans to celebrate his musical gift to the world.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, on February 11, 1974, D'Angelo revolutionized the R&B landscape with his unique blend of soul, funk, hip-hop, and jazz. Often associated with the neo-soul movement and the Soulquarians, his debut album, "Brown Sugar," released in 1995, earned him multiple Grammy nominations and established him as a fresh and original voice in R&B. His second album, "Voodoo," released in 2000, further solidified his status as a visionary artist, winning a Grammy for Best R&B Album. "Voodoo" was known for its funky, sensual sound and D'Angelo's innovative vocal style. The hit single "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" and its provocative music video became a cultural phenomenon. In 2016, D'Angelo won a Grammy for Best R&B Album for "Black Messiah".

D'Angelo's sultry and distinctive vocal style set him apart from his contemporaries. His ability to blend genres and create a signature sound influenced countless artists. He collaborated with prominent artists such as Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip, and Lauryn Hill.

DJ Premier, who worked with D'Angelo on the 1998 song "Devil's Pie," shared his condolences on X: "Such a sad loss to the passing of D'Angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep peacefully D'. Love You KING". Jill Scott expressed her love and respect for D'Angelo's gift, acknowledging the pain of the loss.

D'Angelo is survived by two sons and a daughter. His firstborn son's mother was Angie Stone, who passed away earlier this year in a car accident. Stone and D'Angelo collaborated on her 1999 debut album, "Black Diamond," with Stone calling D'Angelo her "musical soulmate".

Details regarding funeral arrangements and memorial services have not yet been released.
