Jennifer Lopez recently revealed her initial hesitation about going platinum blonde for her role as Ingrid Luna in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical, "Kiss of the Spider Woman". The actress, known for her caramel and honey blonde shades, confessed her worries about how the drastic change would complement her skin tone.
During an appearance on the Howard Stern Show on Wednesday, October 15, Lopez discussed her transformation for the role. Stern complimented her performance and her character's platinum blonde hairstyle. Lopez admitted that she was initially concerned about the bold change. "It was so different," Lopez said. "I was just worried because I'd never had platinum blonde hair". She explained that her previous experiences with blonde wigs had been unflattering. "It always looked so terrible on my skin tone," she confessed. "I thought this would be bad".
In "Kiss of the Spider Woman," Lopez plays Ingrid Luna, a fictional Hollywood star who exists in the imagination of two prisoners. The film, directed by Bill Condon, explores the lives of Valentin, a Marxist revolutionary (played by Diego Luna), and Molina, a gay window dresser imprisoned for "immoral behavior" (played by Tonatiuh). To escape the harsh realities of their South American prison, they immerse themselves in fantasies of a Hollywood musical starring Ingrid Luna.
To achieve the platinum blonde look, Lopez collaborated with her longtime makeup artist, Scott Barnes. Barnes reassured her that he could make it work, and adjusted her makeup to complement the new hair color. "The skin needed to be transformed. I had to put more pink in my foundation," Lopez explained. She also noted that her usual lipstick shades wouldn't suit the platinum blonde.
Lopez shared that the transformation went beyond just her physical appearance. "Everything changed. I turned into a different person," she said. "My hands moved differently. My body was different. Colors that I wore. Everything changed".
Despite her initial reservations, Lopez embraced the platinum blonde look for the film. At a screening in Beverly Hills, she recalled telling director Bill Condon, "Well, f--- it, let's do it". Although she didn't maintain the platinum blonde hair after filming, she has continued to incorporate the glamorous aesthetic of the film into her style. On October 6, she wore a Harris Reed Demi-Couture gown with a spider-like corset, a clear reference to her role in "Kiss of the Spider Woman".
"Kiss of the Spider Woman" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025, and was released in the United States on October 10, 2025. The film has received generally positive reviews, with critics praising Lopez's performance and the film's visual style.
