Google is making a substantial bet on India's AI future, announcing a \$15 billion investment to establish its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. This investment, Google's largest in India to date, aims to accelerate AI-driven transformation across the country and aligns with the Indian government's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
The AI hub will be a multifaceted investment, combining powerful gigawatt-scale data center operations, new large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber-optic network. This infrastructure will support next-generation AI applications, cloud computing, and data-intensive services, boosting India's capacity in these critical areas. The project is being developed with leading partners, AdaniConneX and Airtel. Airtel has also partnered with Google to establish India's first mega AI hub in Visakhapatnam.
A key component of the investment is the construction of a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam, including multiple international subsea cables connecting to Google's existing global network. This will establish Visakhapatnam as a major AI and connectivity hub, serving not only India but also the rest of the world. The gateway will enhance connectivity, provide route diversity, and help meet the surging demand for digital services in the country.
The announcement was made at Bharat AI Shakti, a Google-hosted event in New Delhi, preceding the India-AI Impact Summit 2026. The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon'ble Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon'ble Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and Shri Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud.
Google's investment is expected to have a significant economic impact, with an analysis by Access Partnership projecting that the AI hub could generate at least \$15 billion in American gross domestic product (GDP) over five years. It is also projected to generate over 180,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, making it one of the largest foreign direct investments in India's tech sector.
This initiative is seen as a transformative step toward making Visakhapatnam a global tech hub and strengthening U.S.-India tech cooperation. It also aligns with the U.S.’s and India’s shared priority of secure and responsible AI development. Google's commitment underscores India's growing importance in the global AI landscape and its potential to become a major hub for AI innovation.
