PMAY-Urban 2.0 Boost: Government Approves Construction of 1.41 Lakh Additional Affordable Homes for Urban Dwellers.

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has given the green light for the construction of an additional 1.41 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0. This decision, made during a meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Srinivas Katikithala, brings the total number of sanctioned dwelling units under the scheme to over 10 lakh.

The approval encompasses projects across 14 states and Union Territories, including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Haryana, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

Launched in 2015, PMAY-U aims to provide all-weather pucca houses with basic amenities to eligible urban poor. Over 9.55 million houses have been completed and delivered under the scheme’s first phase. Revamped in September 2024, PMAY-U 2.0 seeks to support an additional 10 million urban poor and middle-class families, offering financial assistance of up to ₹2,50,000 per beneficiary. Together, PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 have sanctioned over 12.2 million houses to date.

Of the 140,942 newly approved houses, 76,976 are designated for women, including single, widowed, and separated beneficiaries. According to the ministry, PMAY-U 2.0 has so far sanctioned 631,000 houses for women, including over 70,000 for single or widowed females, along with 104,000 units for senior citizens and 163 for transgender beneficiaries. Furthermore, approximately 220,000 homes have been sanctioned for Scheduled Castes (SCs), 51,181 for Scheduled Tribes (STs), and 535,000 for Other Backward Classes (OBC) households.

The PMAY-U 2.0 scheme aims to provide ease of living to urban migrants and the poor in the industrial sector, as well as in the non-formal urban economy, by providing access to dignified affordable rental housing close to their workplaces. As of now, 119.31 Lakh houses have been sanctioned, 112.98 Lakh houses have been grounded, and 93.81 Lakh houses have been completed under the PMAY-U.
