How the Scam Works

Scammers are sending out fake emails that closely resemble official Income Tax Department communications. These emails often contain subject lines such as "Tax Refund Payment" or "Recalculation of your tax refund payment". The emails may state that there has been an error in calculating your tax and a refund needs to be issued. The sender's email address may appear legitimate, but often contains slight variations or misspellings. For example, one known fake email ID being used is donotreply@incometaxindiafilling.gov.in.

These fraudulent messages typically include links that direct users to fake websites that look like the official Income Tax portal. These fake websites prompt users to enter personal data, such as PAN details, login passwords, bank credentials, and one-time passwords (OTPs). By obtaining this information, scammers can commit identity theft, banking fraud, and misuse sensitive taxpayer information. In some cases, clicking on the links can also download malware onto your device.

Protecting Yourself

The Income Tax Department has advised taxpayers to be cautious and take the following steps to protect themselves from these scams:

• Do not click on suspicious links: Avoid clicking on any links in emails, WhatsApp messages, or SMS messages that claim to be from the Income Tax Department.
• Verify the email address: Check the sender's email address carefully. Official Income Tax Department email addresses end with "@incometax.gov.in". Be wary of email addresses that use similar but slightly different domains.
• Access the official website directly: Access all tax-related services and information only through the official Income Tax Department website: www.incometax.gov.in. Do not trust websites that mimic the official domain.
• Never share sensitive information: The Income Tax Department never asks for confidential information such as passwords, OTPs, or bank details over phone, email, or SMS.
• Be wary of unexpected communications: Be suspicious of any unexpected emails or messages claiming tax refunds or requesting personal information. The IRS does not contact taxpayers by email, text message, or social media to get your personal or financial information.
• Verify any communication through official channels: Taxpayers must verify any communication from the IT department through official channels.

What to Do If You Suspect a Scam

If you receive a suspicious email or message, do not click on any links or provide any personal information. Instead, take the following steps:

• Report the email: Forward the suspicious email to webmanager@incometax.gov.in and incident@cert-in.org.in.
• Check your refund status on the official website: Visit the official Income Tax Department website to check the status of your refund.
• Report identity theft: If you believe you have provided identity thieves with your personal information, report it at IdentityTheft.gov.
• Consider obtaining an IP PIN: Consider obtaining an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS. This six-digit number helps prevent identity thieves from filing fraudulent tax returns in your name.
