In a surprising turn of events at the IPL 2026 auction, Auqib Dar, the Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler, has landed a lucrative deal with the Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 8.4 crore. This acquisition is particularly noteworthy considering that Dar, who is known locally as the "Dale Steyn of Baramulla" for his aggressive bowling style, was reportedly rejected by five other IPL teams and has even faced challenges with access to proper cricketing equipment like spikes.
Dar's journey to the IPL has been anything but conventional. The 28-year-old initially aimed to become a doctor, fulfilling his father’s aspirations. However, his passion for cricket led him to pursue trials with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). Despite early setbacks and rejections, Dar persevered, finally getting selected in 2016.
His Ranji Trophy debut in 2020 saw him make an immediate impact, taking three wickets against Karnataka in the quarter-final. Although he went wicketless in the second innings, he proved to be his team's most economical bowler. In that season, he took 24 wickets in seven games, averaging 18.50, with two five-wicket hauls. Despite this promising start, his red-ball career experienced an unexpected lull for the next two years.
Ahead of the auction, Dar impressed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he picked up 15 wickets at an average of 13. In his last match for J&K before the auction, he scored a quickfire 32 off 21 balls in their victory against Madhya Pradesh.
At the IPL 2026 auction, Dar's base price was INR 30 lakh. A fierce bidding war ensued between Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Sunrisers Hyderabad before Delhi secured his services.
For Delhi Capitals, Dar's inclusion brings raw speed, swing, and a compelling domestic success story to their bowling attack. He is now set to share the new ball with Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc.
Dar draws inspiration from South African legend Dale Steyn, admiring his bowling action, speed, and aggression. He aspires to represent his state and country at the highest level. His coach has noted his natural power with the bat and believes that with more work on his batting and fielding, he can become a valuable all-rounder.
