Asrani's wife: A 50-year love story born on set of an Amitabh Bachchan film.

The world of Hindi cinema is mourning the loss of veteran actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, who passed away on October 20, 2025, at the age of 84. While fans remember his iconic roles, especially the jailor in "Sholay," many are also curious about the woman who shared his life for nearly five decades: his wife, Manju Asrani.

Manju Asrani, born Manju Bansal, is herself a Hindi film actress who was most active during the 1970s and 80s. Her career includes roles in films such as "Chor Sipahee," "Tapasya," "Jurmana," and "Nalayak". Beyond acting, Manju also directed films and series in the 1990s.

The love story between Asrani and Manju began on the sets of two films: "Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar" and "Namak Haraam". Working together sparked a connection that blossomed into a lifelong partnership. In "Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar," Asrani played Champak Boomia/Amit Desai, while Manju portrayed Kesari Desai. After their marriage, they shared the screen in movies like "Tapasya," "Chandi Sona," "Jaan-E-Bahaar," "Jurmana," "Nalayak," "Sarkari Mehmaan," "Narad Vivah," and "Chor Sipahee".

The couple's personal and professional lives intertwined, creating a bond that stood the test of time. They even collaborated on "Hum Nahin Sudhrenge," a home production directed by Asrani in 1980.

Asrani's manager, Babubhai Thiba, revealed that the actor had been unwell and was admitted to Arogya Nidhi Hospital due to breathing issues. He passed away on Monday afternoon, and his last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium. According to reports, Asrani wished for a private ceremony, and his wife, Manju, honored his request by keeping the news under wraps until after the funeral.

The family released a statement on Asrani's Instagram profile, expressing their sorrow and acknowledging his immense contribution to Hindi cinema. The statement read, "Our beloved, the one who brought smiles to everyone's faces, Asrani ji is no longer among us. His passing is an irreparable loss for both Hindi cinema and our hearts. The indelible mark he left through his performances will remain eternal. May God grant peace to his soul. Om Shanti".

Asrani's final social media post, a Diwali greeting shared just hours before his death, added a poignant touch to the day. It remains unclear whether Asrani himself or a family member posted the message.

As the film industry mourns the loss of a comedic legend, Asrani's legacy lives on through his vast body of work and the memories he created with his wife, Manju Asrani. Their love story, which began amidst the glitz and glamour of Bollywood, serves as a reminder that enduring partnerships can be forged even in the most demanding of industries.
