On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed for Diwali Balipratipada. This closure follows the special Muhurat trading session on Tuesday, October 21, which marked the beginning of the new Samvat year 2082. Normal trading on the NSE and BSE will resume on Thursday, October 23.

The stock market observed a holiday on Tuesday, October 21, for Diwali Laxmi Pujan, but conducted a one-hour Muhurat trading session between 1:45 PM and 2:45 PM. Modifications to trades were permitted until 2:55 PM. This special session is a long-standing tradition, considered auspicious for initiating wealth creation in the new Samvat year. Trading was allowed across all market segments, including equities, derivatives, currency, and commodities. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) and the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) also held Muhurat Trading sessions on October 21.

On Monday, October 20, the stock markets functioned normally, despite Diwali Lakshmi Puja celebrations in some states.

After Diwali Balipratipada on October 22, there are two more scheduled stock market holidays in 2025: November 5 for Prakash Gurpurab and December 25 for Christmas. The stock market holiday schedule for 2025 lists a total of 18 trading holidays, with four falling on weekdays.

Ahead of the Diwali holidays, the stock market showed a bullish trend. On October 21, during the special Diwali session, the Nifty 50 climbed 0.1% to reach 25,868.6, while the Sensex increased by 0.07% to settle at 84,426.34, the highest closing levels since September 2024.

The Muhurat trading session on October 21 included a block deal session from 1:15 PM to 1:30 PM, a pre-opening session from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM, and a closing session from 2:55 PM to 3:05 PM. All trades executed during the Muhurat Trading session are subject to standard settlement rules.
