Kohima: Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman affirmed the central government's commitment to prioritizing the Northeast region through comprehensive development initiatives. Speaking on Friday at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) in Kohima, she emphasized that the Northeast is receiving "top priority" in infrastructure development, investments, skill enhancement, and digital expansion.
Sitharaman highlighted that the Northeast has been placed at the center of policy-making, specifically concerning development, skills, and investments. This strategic focus aims to compensate for the infrastructure deficits of the past decades and facilitate the region's integration and growth. She noted the significant improvements in connectivity, digital infrastructure, and market access that are now supporting the region's progress.
"Under PM Modi, northeast gets every priority, even before any other part of the country gets… Northeast is being kept at the top of the priority and that will continue, so that you serve the purpose of being the gateway to Southeast Asia,” Sitharaman said.
The Finance Minister pointed out the rapid upgrades in highways, airports, digital networks, and logistics, which are addressing the region's historical infrastructure challenges. She stated that capacities have been significantly ramped up, and digital capabilities are rapidly advancing. The region's geographical location is crucial for India's engagement with Southeast Asia, making it a key partner in the Act East Policy.
Sitharaman also addressed the importance of preparing the younger generation for the digital future, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology. She referenced Tata's establishment of an Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Morigaon, Assam, and encouraged similar ventures in Nagaland to provide local skills and opportunities in the semiconductor industry.
In addition, Sitharaman discussed the expansion of digital networks and connectivity through BSNL and private companies, aiming to cover remote areas of the country. These efforts include extending optical fiber cables to villages and schools, as well as spectrum sharing and usage.
Addressing concerns about negative influences, Sitharaman cautioned young people against drug abuse and encouraged them to foster a positive ecosystem of learning and opportunity.
During the event, Sitharaman witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NIELIT Kohima and Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Private Limited. This agreement is expected to significantly boost semiconductor talent development in Nagaland and the broader Northeast.
Sitharaman underscored that the traditional logistical challenges faced by the Northeast are being addressed, ensuring that the region can grow equally across all sectors. She reiterated that the government's commitment to the Northeast remains a top priority, with ongoing efforts to transform the region into a hub for technology and innovation.
