Bihar Election Fallout: Congress State Leader Rajesh Ram's Defeat in Kutumba Triggers Emotional Outbursts – Video

The political landscape in Bihar witnessed a dramatic turn as the results of the state assembly elections were announced on November 14, 2025. Among the most keenly watched contests was the Kutumba (SC) constituency, where the incumbent Congress MLA and Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president, Rajesh Ram, faced a tough challenge. As the counting progressed, it became evident that Ram was trailing behind his rival, Lalan Ram of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM).

The final results confirmed the defeat of Rajesh Ram, who had represented Kutumba in the Bihar Legislative Assembly for two consecutive terms, winning in 2015 and 2020. Lalan Ram of HAM secured a decisive victory with 84,727 votes (48.79%), while Rajesh Ram managed to secure 63,202 votes (36.40%). The margin of defeat was a significant 21,525 votes. Shyambali Ram of Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) got 6,065 votes (3.49%) and Ram Janam Ram of Aazad Samaj Party (ASPKR) got 6,022 votes (3.47%).

The loss was particularly painful for Congress workers, who had hoped for a third consecutive term for their state unit president. Visuals circulating on social media showed emotional scenes outside the counting center, with Congress supporters in tears as the news of Rajesh Ram's defeat sank in. The Kutumba Assembly is part of the Aurangabad district and is reserved for the Scheduled Caste.

Rajesh Ram's political journey has been marked by both successes and setbacks. He began his political career by winning the Kutumba seat in 2015 and retained it in 2020 with an increased vote share and winning margin. In the 2020 elections, Rajesh Kumar of INC won with 36.61% vote share (50,822 votes) against Sharwan Bhuiya of HAM who secured 24.61% (34,169 votes), with a margin of 16,653 votes. In 2015, Rajesh Kumar of INC won with 38.33% vote share (51,303 votes) against Manju Devi of IND who got 29.92% (40,205 votes), with a margin of 11,098 votes. Before his victories, he had faced a defeat in 2010, finishing third. His ascent to the position of state unit president in March 2025 was seen as a significant achievement and a reflection of his standing within the party.

The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections were held in two phases, with the first phase of polling on November 6 and the second on November 11. The Congress contested the election as part of the Mahagathbandhan, led by RJD's Tejashwi Yadav. The Kutumba constituency, located in the Magadh region, has a significant Scheduled Caste population of 29.2 percent. The constituency has been changing hands across alliances. In 2010, Lalan Ram of JD(U) won with 35.12% vote share (46,920 votes) against Rajesh Kumar of RJD who secured 28.45% (38,000 votes), with a margin of 8,920 votes.

The defeat of Rajesh Ram in Kutumba is a setback for the Congress party in Bihar. As the state unit president, his loss carries symbolic weight and raises questions about the party's strategy and performance in the elections.
