In response to recent intelligence inputs suggesting the presence of terrorist groups, security forces have launched extensive cordon and search operations in the Kishtwar, Doda, and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir. These operations, initiated on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, are part of heightened anti-terror measures in the region.
The focus of the operations is on the upper reaches and mountainous hinterlands of these districts. Security forces are utilizing drones and other aerial surveillance equipment to monitor the area and track down the terrorists. The operations are based on reports indicating the presence of two terrorist groups operating in the Doda-Kishtwar forest areas. It is believed that these groups consist of Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists, with two to three operatives each.
The Romeo Force of the Army is also conducting search operations at Khanetar Top along the Indo-Pak border in Poonch and adjoining areas, following suspected terrorist movement. These troops are equipped with aerial surveillance support and sniffer dogs.
In addition to the search operations, security forces have intensified vehicle checking along the Pathankot-Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, and Udhampur districts. This is part of a heightened alert ahead of the New Year. The border security grid has also been strengthened, and Village Defence Guards and border police have been activated along the Indo-Pak border to prevent potential infiltration.
These operations are part of a broader effort by the Indian Army to maintain a proactive winter posture and sustain pressure on potential terrorist hideouts. Despite the harsh winter conditions and traditionally reduced militant activity due to heavy snowfall, the Army has established temporary bases and surveillance posts deep inside snow-bound regions. Troops are patrolling high-altitude ridgelines, valleys, and dense forests to deny terrorists any sanctuary.
A key feature of this winter's operations is a high level of inter-agency coordination. The Army is leading synchronized operations involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, Special Operations Group (SOG), civil administration, forest guards, and Village Defence Guards (VDGs), ensuring seamless intelligence sharing and operational efficiency.
Intelligence assessments suggest the presence of around 30-35 Pakistani terrorists in the Jammu region. Recent inputs indicate that sustained counter-terror operations and declining local support have forced these groups to retreat deeper into uninhabited mountain ranges in search of temporary winter hideouts. Reports also suggest that the remaining terrorists are attempting to coerce villagers for shelter and food, although their support base among locals and overground workers has sharply declined.
The security forces are committed to preventing any resurgence of terrorism in the region and ensuring the safety and security of the local population.
