India is set to emphasize issues of importance to the Global South at the upcoming G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, according to a top official from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attending the 20th G20 Leaders' Summit from November 21-23, marking the first time the summit is being held on African soil.
Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (Economic Relations), MEA, conveyed India's commitment to ensuring the continuity of its G20 priorities, especially after its successful presidency in 2023. He noted that the G20 has become a crucial platform for international economic cooperation and for addressing globally significant matters. During a media briefing, Dalela stated that India's leadership will highlight all important matters relevant from the perspective of India and the Global South.
This summit marks the fourth consecutive G20 summit held in the Global South, following presidencies by Indonesia, India and Brazil. The MEA official expressed satisfaction that issues of importance to the Global South are central to discussions under South Africa's presidency, which is themed "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability".
Prime Minister Modi is expected to actively participate in all three sessions of the summit. These sessions will cover "Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth," focusing on building economies, trade, development financing, and debt burdens; "A Resilient World," addressing disaster risk reduction, climate change, energy transitions, and food systems; and "A Fair and a Just Future for All," which includes discussions on critical minerals, decent work, and artificial intelligence.
In addition to the summit sessions, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with other leaders and participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders' Meeting.
The G20 comprises major economies that represent 85% of the world's GDP and 75% of international trade. The MEA has stated that the G20 provides an excellent opportunity for leaders of major and emerging economies to discuss important issues impacting the world.
