Johannesburg, South Africa – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a new trilateral partnership between India, Australia, and Canada, focusing on technology and innovation. The announcement was made on Saturday, November 22, 2025, following a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg.
The partnership, named the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership, aims to deepen collaboration between the three democratic partners across three continents and oceans. The focus will be on emerging technologies, diversification of supply chains, clean energy, and the mass adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
PM Modi shared his enthusiasm in a social media post, stating, "We are delighted to announce an Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership today". He further added that the initiative will bolster collaboration across three continents, emphasizing emerging technologies, supply chain diversification, clean energy solutions, and the widespread integration of AI.
According to a joint statement by the governments of India, Australia, and Canada, the three nations have agreed to amplify their collaborative efforts in critical and emerging technologies, complementing existing bilateral initiatives. The partnership will leverage the unique strengths of each country, with a particular emphasis on green energy innovation and building resilient supply chains, including those for critical minerals.
The joint statement also highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration: "It will deepen their respective ambition and strategic collaboration towards net zero and drive further diversification of supply chains towards a secure, sustainable, and resilient future. The partnership will also examine the development and mass adoption of artificial intelligence to improve the lives of our citizens".
The ACITI Partnership seeks to foster cooperation in sectors including clean energy, diversified and resilient supply chains (particularly in critical minerals), and the development and mass adoption of artificial intelligence.
Officials from the three countries are scheduled to meet in the first quarter of 2026 to advance the initiative. This meeting will likely outline specific projects and strategies for achieving the partnership's goals.
In addition to this trilateral partnership, PM Modi held separate meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday. "It was wonderful meeting Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Johannesburg. This year has brought new energy to the India-UK partnership and we will keep driving it forward across many domains," Modi stated.
