The Columbus Blue Jackets suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, November 22, 2025, relinquishing a third-period lead and ultimately falling 4-3 in overtime. Alex DeBrincat sealed the victory for the Red Wings, scoring 1:50 into the extra period.
DeBrincat's game-winning goal, his tenth of the season, came as he skated in from the right side and lifted a shot over Blue Jackets goaltender Jet Greaves' left shoulder. The Red Wings' victory marks their third win in the last four games.
The Blue Jackets started strong, with Adam Fantilli scoring on a 5-on-3 power play at 6:42 of the first period, assisted by Zach Werenski. Lucas Raymond scored an unassisted goal for Detroit in the opening minute of the second period, but Columbus quickly responded. Just 18 seconds later, Miles Wood redirected a shot from Denton Mateychuk, restoring the Blue Jackets' lead. Werenski then extended the lead to 3-1 at 8:38 of the third during a 4-on-4 situation.
However, the Red Wings mounted a comeback, scoring twice in a span of 3:02 to tie the game. Ben Chiarot fired a shot from the slot for his second goal of the season. Moritz Seider then scored from the point just two seconds after a Columbus penalty expired, tying the game with 6:35 remaining in the third.
Beyond DeBrincat's heroics, Seider and Chiarot each contributed a goal and an assist for Detroit. Raymond also scored, while Patrick Kane tallied two assists. Goaltender Cam Talbot made 30 saves for the Red Wings. For the Blue Jackets, Werenski had a goal and an assist, while Fantilli and Wood also scored. Greaves stopped 29 shots in the losing effort.
This loss comes after Fantilli scored an overtime winner against Toronto on Thursday, also assisted by Werenski.
The Blue Jackets will look to bounce back as they visit Washington on Monday. The Red Wings will also be on the road Monday, visiting New Jersey.
In other news, the Blue Jackets are preparing to host the Detroit Red Wings in the 2025 NHL Stadium Series at Ohio Stadium on March 1, 2025. This will be the first regular-season outdoor game for the Blue Jackets and the fifth for the Red Wings.
