An interim inquiry into the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Games 2025 has revealed corruption, nepotism, regional bias, moral misconduct, and procedural lapses within the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The investigation, prompted by the "fiasco" surrounding India's participation, has uncovered unauthorized foreign travel, suspicious financial transactions, misuse of authority, biased selections, and failures to register qualified athletes. These lapses not only embarrassed India internationally but also denied student-athletes crucial competitive opportunities.
The four-member committee, headed by Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya vice-chancellor Alok Kumar Chakrawal, presented an interim report with evidence of dereliction of duty and possible financial misconduct by suspended joint secretary (sports) Baljit Singh Sekhon. The report noted instances indicative of failure to discharge duties, breach of responsibility, nonfeasance, negligence, and failure to act. Multiple unexplained deposits were found in Sekhon's bank account in June 2025, transactions potentially linked to his official capacity. The committee also questioned conflicting statements regarding the funding of Sekhon's trip to Germany. Sekhon has declined to comment, citing his suspension.
Another suspended official, Gaurav Rai, is accused of improperly facilitating the inclusion of his PhD guide, identified as a yoga expert, in the Indian contingent, despite yoga not being a part of the Games. Rai allegedly accepted travel sponsorship from KIIT University without proper authorization, resulting in an "unauthorized financial benefit". The committee stated that repeated non-compliance with established protocols may be construed as gross disobedience and blatant insubordination, recommending termination under AIU rules.
The FISU World University Games are held every two years in different cities and draw thousands of student-athletes together to compete. The Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany is scheduled to host the Games from July 16 to 27, 2025. The competition program includes fifteen compulsory sports, and organizers can include up to three optional sports. The Games also incorporate educational and cultural aspects.
The World University Games, also known as the Universiade, is the largest global multi-sports event for student-athletes. The event combines sporting competitions, cultural experiences, scientific exchange, and international networking.
