The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Alexandre Texier to a one-year, $1 million contract. The signing, confirmed by Texier's agent Dan Milstein on Sunday, comes after the St. Louis Blues placed Texier on waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.
Texier, 26, became a free agent on Sunday following the termination of his contract with the Blues. He was in the final season of a two-year, $4.2 million deal, which carried a $2.1 million cap hit. St. Louis acquired Texier from the Columbus Blue Jackets in June 2024 in exchange for a draft pick.
Prior to joining the Canadiens, Texier played eight games with the Blues this season, recording one assist. He last played on Nov. 6 and was subsequently assigned to the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds on Friday. His average ice time with the Blues was 10:15, the lowest of his seven seasons in the NHL.
Drafted 45th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2017, Texier has accumulated 40 goals and 51 assists for 91 points in 240 career games split between the Blue Jackets and Blues. He has also added eight points in 21 postseason contests. In the 2023-24 season, Texier recorded a career-high of 30 points with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Canadiens, currently fifth in the Atlantic Division with a record of 11-7-3, have been dealing with injuries to key players such as Patrik Laine, Kirby Dach, and Alex Newhook. The addition of Texier is expected to provide veteran depth to the team's bottom six.
Texier may have some familiarity with members of the Canadiens organization, having spent time with KalPa in Finland at the same time as Oliver Kapanen, and with the Blue Jackets when AHL bench boss Pascal Vincent was coaching there. He is expected to join the Canadiens for their upcoming road trip and could potentially make his debut in one of their upcoming games.
