The one-man commission investigating the death of singer Zubeen Garg has extended the deadline for submitting statements and evidence to December 12. Officials announced the extension on Monday.
Headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia, the commission began recording statements and receiving evidence on November 3. The initial deadline was November 21. Aroop Pathak, the commission's member-secretary, announced the extension.
In a notice issued on Friday, Pathak specified that individuals with knowledge of the incident can submit notarized affidavits until December 12, between 10:30 am and 4 pm, excluding Sundays. The notice also requires individuals intending to furnish statements to provide a list of supporting documents, including originals or true copies, and the names and addresses of individuals from whom remaining documents may be obtained.
The Assam government established the commission, headed by a sitting judge of Gauhati High Court, on October 4, 2025, to investigate the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg's death in Singapore on September 19. The commission will investigate the events leading up to and following the incident. It will also examine potential lapses, acts of omission or commission, or negligence by individuals, authorities, or institutions. Furthermore, the commission will ascertain whether external factors, including foul play, conspiracy, or unlawful acts, contributed to the incident.
The judicial commission's inquiry runs parallel to an active investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The commission is operating under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952. The commission's mandates include inquiring into the facts and circumstances of Zubeen Garg's death, ascertaining the sequence of events, examining potential negligence, and ascertaining any contributing external factors.
