New Delhi: A Delhi court has sent 17 protesters to three-day judicial custody in connection with a demonstration held at India Gate on November 23, 2025, concerning the city's deteriorating air quality. The court's decision follows arrests made during the protest, where demonstrators allegedly clashed with police.
The incident occurred during a protest against the worsening air quality in the national capital. According to reports, the situation escalated when some protesters allegedly used pepper spray on police personnel while being removed from the area. Law enforcement officials stated that 15 individuals were initially arrested on charges of obstructing and assaulting police officers, as well as blocking the road during the demonstration.
Judicial Magistrate Aridaman Singh Cheema also sent a person to an observation home until their age is verified.
Earlier reports mentioned that five students were sent to two-day judicial custody in connection with the same protest. These students were identified as Akash, Ahan, Akshay, Sameer, and Vishnu. It was alleged that these individuals also used pepper spray on police personnel during the demonstration.
The recent protests reflect growing public discontent over Delhi's persistent air pollution crisis and concerns about government inaction. In similar news earlier in November 2025, dozens of people, including parents and environmental activists, were detained at India Gate for protesting the worsening air quality and expressing discontent over a Supreme Court ruling on stray dogs. At that time, police said the gathering was unauthorized.
