Tisca Chopra, in a recent interview, shared insights into the making of her directorial debut, "Saali Mohabbat," which premiered on ZEE5 on December 12, 2025. The film, a thriller starring Radhika Apte and Divyenndu Sharma, has been receiving praise from audiences and critics alike. However, the journey to bring this project to fruition was not without its challenges. Chopra revealed that co-writing the film with her husband, Sanjay Chopra, a pilot, led to intense creative differences, bringing them to the brink of divorce.
Chopra described their contrasting writing styles, noting that her husband's approach is "robust" while hers is "more subtle". Despite these differences, she believes that the combination of their perspectives ultimately benefited the script, creating a "yin and yang" balance. She told Mid-Day, "We almost got divorced writing it".
In addition to the writing challenges, Chopra also discussed the difficulties of directing her first feature film. She recounted how producer Manish Malhotra initially suggested she only take on one role. Chopra realized the wisdom of his advice once she committed to directing. "Directing is a mother-of-God hard job. It just never ends," she said. She described the constant barrage of questions a director faces daily, ranging from significant creative decisions to minute details like the size of a car's number plate or whether an actor should shave his chest. "If you don't answer, they'll think that you don't know your mind. So, you just have to make a decision, even if it's wrong. And then you make it the right decision," Chopra stated.
Chopra also expressed her dissatisfaction with censorship, recounting an instance where a word in one of the film's songs had to be altered due to legal concerns. Despite disagreeing with the need for the change, they complied with the internal legal team's request. "We were told in the beginning [to drop it], but we still went ahead and recorded it. Then we had to dub it to something else," she explained. She voiced her broader sentiment against censorship, arguing that if 18-year-olds can choose a government, they should also be able to choose what they want to watch.
"Saali Mohabbat" centers around Smita, a village housewife played by Radhika Apte, whose life is shattered when her husband and another person are murdered in her home. The film explores themes of suspicion, hidden power, and the complexities of interpersonal relationships. The cast also includes Divyenndu Sharma, Anurag Kashyap, Sauraseni Maitra, Anshuman Pushkar, and Sharat Saxena.
