Air India has issued a travel advisory for passengers anticipating potential flight disruptions due to predicted dense fog in Delhi and other parts of northern and eastern India. The advisory, released on Wednesday night, December 17, 2025, alerts travelers to the possibility of reduced visibility affecting flight operations at Delhi's primary hub and other regional airports.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi has already implemented Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) to ensure safe aircraft operations amid the foggy conditions. As of Thursday, December 18, 2025, 27 flights were canceled at Delhi Airport, including 16 departures and 11 arrivals, due to the dense fog and low visibility. Several other flights have been delayed. Visibility has dropped significantly, with reports indicating visibility as low as 100 meters in some areas.
Air India is taking proactive steps to minimize inconvenience, including round-the-clock assistance to help passengers make alternative arrangements. The airline has launched its 'FogCare' initiative, providing advance alerts to passengers on affected flights via their registered phone numbers. This initiative allows travelers to reschedule flights without extra charges or request a full refund if they prefer not to travel.
Passengers are strongly advised to check their flight status on Air India's official website before heading to the airport, especially during the busy holiday season. Other airlines, including SpiceJet and IndiGo, have also issued travel advisories, urging passengers to verify their flight status due to potential disruptions. IndiGo has reported cancellations of flights, and has issued an advisory regarding disruptions in flight operations due to low visibility in Chandigarh.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted shallow to moderate fog in the mornings of December 18, 20, and 23, with dense fog expected on December 21 and 22. These conditions are likely to cause further flight cancellations and delays. Delhi Airport Authority is collaborating with all stakeholders to minimize passenger inconvenience. The airport has CAT III-B landing capability, which allows specialized technical support for landing planes even during severe fog. However, the intensity of the fog has reduced the "turnaround time" of aircraft, leading to a backlog.
Travelers who decide not to travel due to fog-related delays may request a full refund. Air India has assured passengers that the safety and well-being of guests and crew remain their top priority. Passengers are asked to be patient and understanding during this time.
