Bangladesh Unrest: Newspaper Offices Ablaze, Protesters Target Indian Envoy's Residence - Live Updates.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing a surge of violence, triggered by the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a key figure in the 2024 pro-democracy uprising. Hadi succumbed to his injuries on Thursday in a Singapore hospital, after being shot by masked assailants on December 12. This event has ignited widespread protests throughout the country, particularly in Dhaka, the capital.

The unrest has taken a concerning turn with protesters targeting newspaper offices and the residence of the Indian deputy ambassador. Several videos circulating on social media depict protesters setting fire to and vandalizing the offices of Daily Prothom Alo and Daily Star, two of Bangladesh's leading newspapers. Journalists and staff inside the buildings have used social media to confirm the fires and appeal for an end to the violence. Zyma Islam, a reporter for the Daily Star, posted on social media about being trapped inside the burning building.

In addition to the attacks on media outlets, hundreds of protesters have gathered outside the home of India's deputy ambassador in Dhaka. Local news reports indicate that police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Protesters have also blocked a major highway connecting Dhaka with Mymensingh and attacked the residence of a former minister in Chittagong.

The death of Hadi, a 32-year-old spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha culture group and a prominent critic of both India and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has exacerbated existing tensions in Bangladesh. Hadi was planning to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming national elections scheduled for February 2026. His assassination attempt prompted Bangladesh to summon the Indian envoy to Dhaka, seeking clarification and cooperation in apprehending the suspects, who authorities believe may have fled to India.

India has also summoned the Bangladeshi High Commissioner in New Delhi amidst growing security concerns and protests. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has temporarily closed two visa application centers in Khulna and Rajshahi due to the deteriorating security situation.

The current interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, assumed power after the 2024 uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina, who has since taken refuge in India. Hasina's Awami League party has rejected the upcoming elections, and some accuse the interim government of enabling the rise of Islamists in Bangladesh. The government has banned all activities by Hasina's party, further fueling political tensions.

The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation. The international community is closely monitoring the events as Bangladesh navigates this period of political unrest and violence.
