In a recent conversation with Masoom Minawala, interior designer Vinita Chaitanya revealed insights into the vanity vans of Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. Chaitanya, who has designed homes and other spaces for Deepika Padukone, including two of her vanity vans, shared details about the stars' preferences and how they utilize these personal spaces on set.
Vanity vans are often seen as a symbol of stardom, but Chaitanya suggests they are more than that, serving as deeply personal spaces shaped by the routines and functions of the actors. She noted that Deepika Padukone was one of the first actors to take a keen interest in designing her vanity van, knowing exactly what she wanted. For Chaitanya, designing Deepika's vans was enjoyable, although it required her to work with technicians in remote locations, providing a fascinating look into how actors use these spaces.
Chaitanya discovered the nuances of vanity van requirements during her research, learning that there are typically two vans: a smaller van for shorter commutes and a larger one for bigger studio sets. As part of her research, she had the opportunity to step inside Shah Rukh Khan's vanity van while he and Deepika Padukone were filming together.
Comparing the two stars' vanity vans, Chaitanya pointed out that Deepika had very specific requirements, while Shah Rukh Khan's van was designed for comfort and functionality. She described Shah Rukh Khan's van as "fabulous" and noted that it even included a small gym.
In contrast, Chaitanya had previously described her initial reaction to Deepika's older vanity van as "horrified," recalling it as a converted bus with basic comforts. This prompted Deepika to enlist Chaitanya to design a new one, customized to her needs. The new van was larger than standard buses, measuring 41 ft X 8 ft X 7.5 ft, and was divided into three main areas: a small sitting area for receiving guests, a private lounge for relaxation, and a staff zone with a pantry and washroom.
While Chaitanya did not disclose her fees for designing the vanity vans, she admitted that she doesn't work with fixed budgets, and "things cost in millions". She mainly works with high-end clients who own large homes, averaging between 15,000 to 30,000 square feet, and only takes on six projects at a time.
This glimpse into the vanity vans of Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone highlights how these spaces are tailored to the individual needs and preferences of the stars, serving as a home away from home during long hours on set.
