Judicial Appointments: Collegium Endorses Elevation of Five High Court Judges to Chief Justiceships.

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, convened on December 18, 2025, and recommended the appointment of five High Court judges as Chief Justices to various High Courts across the country. These recommendations aim to fill vacancies arising from the retirement or transfer of current Chief Justices. The recommendations have been forwarded to the Union government for further processing and formal appointment notifications.

Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta of the Allahabad High Court has been recommended for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. This appointment follows the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice, which is scheduled for January 9, 2026.

Justice Revati P. Mohite Dere from the Bombay High Court is proposed as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. This recommendation is a result of the transfer of the current Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. The current Chief Justice of Meghalaya HC has been proposed to be transferred to the Kerala HC due to the retirement of the Chief Justice there on January 9. Justice Soumen Sen is the current Chief Justice of Meghalaya HC who is expected to be transferred.

Also from the Bombay High Court, Justice M.S. Sonak has been recommended to be the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. This post will become vacant upon the retirement of the current Chief Justice on January 8, 2026.

Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque of the Kerala High Court is in line to become the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court.

The Collegium has also recommended Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of the Orissa High Court for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
