Ishan Kishan's Joyful Reaction: T20 World Cup Selection a Dream Come True, Overjoyed With The Opportunity

‘I am very happy’: Ishan Kishan Elated After T20 World Cup Squad Call-up

Ishan Kishan has expressed his delight after being named in India's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The wicketkeeper-batter's selection marks a significant comeback to the national side, having last played a T20I for India against Australia in late 2023.

"I am very happy," Kishan told news agency ANI, reacting to his selection. He also acknowledged the contribution of his Jharkhand teammates to their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) victory, adding, "Also very happy for my domestic team, Jharkhand, on winning their maiden SMAT trophy! Everyone played really well!".

Kishan's inclusion in the squad follows a stellar performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26, where he finished as the leading run-scorer. He amassed 517 runs in 10 innings, boasting an impressive average of 57.44 and a striking strike rate of 197.32. His remarkable campaign included two centuries and two half-centuries, including a blistering 101 off 49 balls in the final against Haryana, which led Jharkhand to a massive total of 262/3 and their first-ever SMAT title.

The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, made the announcement on Sunday, December 20, at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Kishan's inclusion comes at the expense of Shubman Gill, who has been dropped from the squad due to fitness and form concerns. Axar Patel has been named as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy.

Agarkar explained that the team management was looking at alternative combinations at the top of the order and that Kishan provides the option to bat at the top, adding solidity to the team. He also mentioned that while Jitesh Sharma hasn't done much wrong, the team was looking for a keeper at the top.

Kishan's father, Pranav Pandey, also expressed his excitement about his son's selection, stating, "Ups and downs are part of sports, but he's worked hard for it". He added that the family is very excited about Ishan being a part of the T20 World Cup team.

Ishan Kishan's journey to the T20 World Cup squad is a story of perseverance and redemption. After a break from cricket in 2023, citing mental fatigue, he returned with a renewed focus, putting in strong performances in domestic cricket. His selection is a testament to his hard work and determination, and he will be looking to make the most of this opportunity on the world stage.

Kishan is expected to serve as the backup wicketkeeper to Sanju Samson in the squad. The team management seems to be considering Samson to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma. With 32 T20I appearances under his belt, Kishan has scored 796 runs at an average of 25.68 and a strike rate of 124.38, including six half-centuries.
