According to Lomesh Dutta, Vice President of Growth at the Dfinity Foundation, these emerging technologies are poised to democratize access to application creation and custom user experiences, potentially disrupting the need for centrally managed software solutions hosted on centralized servers.
Dutta argues that as AI continuously generates and evolves applications, the underlying infrastructure must be secure, tamper-resistant, and capable of maintaining uptime without constant human intervention. Blockchain networks, with their decentralized nature, offer a revolutionary computing paradigm by eliminating central points of control, thus enabling the creation of reliable and fault-tolerant software.
The rise of no-code platforms, particularly those enhanced by AI, empowers users to develop applications using natural language prompts instead of complex computer code. This ease of use could lead to an explosion of user-generated applications, reducing reliance on traditional, centrally managed software solutions.
Several AWS outages in 2025 have already impacted crypto platforms, highlighting the risks associated with centralized infrastructure. These outages, one of which occurred in April and another in October, caused disruptions to centralized crypto exchanges, including Binance, KuCoin, and MEXC. Binance even had to temporarily pause withdrawals until services were restored.
While many crypto companies and Web3 projects currently rely on AWS infrastructure, the inherent need for decentralization in the crypto space may lead to a shift. Dominic Williams, founder of Internet Computer, noted this reliance. The outages experienced this year underscore the importance of end-to-end decentralization in the crypto industry.
AWS recognizes the importance of blockchain and offers various services and solutions for building decentralized applications. These include Amazon Managed Blockchain, which supports Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum. AWS also provides tools for accessing and analyzing public blockchain data from networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Additionally, AWS offers services like Nitro Enclaves for secure operations related to Web3 workloads.
However, some argue that AWS, with its centralized architecture, is not ideally suited for Web3. Decentralized Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) Clouds are emerging as an alternative, addressing the limitations of AWS in terms of native support for Web3 use cases and governance systems.
The debate over whether to build on AWS or fully decentralized solutions continues within the Web3 community. While AWS offers scalability and a wide range of services, the principles of decentralization and the need for tamper-resistant infrastructure are driving the exploration of alternative solutions.
