In East Midnapore, West Bengal, a man has been arrested after allegedly abusing and attempting to assault Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty at a school event on Saturday, December 20, 2025. The incident occurred at South Point Public School in Bhagabanpur during a live performance.
According to Chakraborty's written complaint to the Bhagabanpur police, the accused, identified as Mehboob Mallik, a governing body member of the school, used abusive language and then tried to physically assault her for not singing a "secular" song. Chakraborty, known for her popular Bengali track 'Basanto Eshe Geche', was singing a spiritual song, 'Jago Maa', when the incident occurred.
"He wanted to beat me up," Chakraborty stated in her complaint. A member of Chakraborty's team told The Telegraph Online that Mallik "ran onto the stage and came very close to her and tried to hit her" after she finished singing 'Jago Maa'. Other organizers reportedly intervened and stopped him.
The event had been proceeding smoothly for approximately 45 minutes before the disruption. Shocked by the incident, Chakraborty informed the audience that she could not continue her performance and left the stage. She then filed a complaint at the Bhagabanpur police station.
Lagnajita Chakraborty is a well-known singer-songwriter in the Bengali music industry. She gained prominence with her debut playback song, "Basanto Eshe Geche," from the film "Chotushkone" (2014), composed by Anupam Roy. She is also the recipient of the "Sera Bangali" award of 2015, given by Anandabazar Patrika.
This incident follows Chakraborty's recent allegation of sexual harassment against Bollywood music director Rajesh Roshan, uncle of actor Hrithik Roshan, during a meeting in Mumbai several years ago. Chakraborty stated that Roshan allegedly "slipped his hand inside my skirt" while she was showing him her work on an iPad.
